What are some specs. to look at for buying laptops

I travel alot and I think it's time I look into getting laptop. It's not so much for work as it is for recreation such as web-surfing, DVDs and some games. What are some specs to keep in mind that wouldn't be obsolete in 6 months but still in an affordable range?
